Introduction:
For people who have 5th and 11th house placements or who transits with opposite house placements here it is essential to understand how this axis represents what we have to do versus what we do not want/have to do. In astrology, the houses across from each other represent what can appear like opposing themes. At its core, we hold to balance the themes of each house, use the energy to our benefit, and be conscious if we are overcompensating too much in one house. All planets are not considered equal. Depending on your chart ruler, sub-ruling planet, or other energy in a house, one of the houses may actually be more important to an individual than another.
Houses:
The 5th and 11th are succedent houses and come after the cadent houses that have the most activity. Succedent houses (2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th houses) offer us a sense of grounding and centeredness. There is almost static energy associated here where there a more stationary direction of the energy.. For instance, the 5th house ruled by the Sun is our personal joy - what we find fun, entertaining, or exciting. The 11th house is our social joy - what allegiances we have, what shared ideas we have, and where we belong. Even when there are mutable or cardinal signs in these houses, the general themes are still relegated to this idea of something that is constant or that takes commitment.
Someone with a 5th house Sun and Jupiter may expand in ways that require a consistent showcasing of their talents in order to reach others. This is a contagious energy. However, the native may struggle with Saturn in RX and Mars in the 11th where they feel power struggles always arise in groups. The person can choose to disengage from certain associations in favor of focusing mostly on their 5th house. If the person works on their role among groups and learns to utilize Saturn's rulership of the 11th in a positive way they can overcome the challenges and balance their 5th/11th axis. If the person is simply not ready or lacks the tools, they can overindulge on 5th house pursuits of pleasure and become self-absorbed.
These houses also represent the people who we spend time with. The 5th house is one over from the 4th house we are born into - we can see children and parenting style in 5th. Since the 5th is also related to fun and light-hearted events, you can also see dating patterns or mindset in the 5th. Speaking of children - in the 11th we can see stepchildren or daughter/son in-laws. This falls inline with the concept of everything in our 1st-6th houses (northern part of the chart) is considered foundational. These are the building blocks of our experience whether planets exist there or not. The 11th is where we start to make more connections with those who are not blood or familial related. The 11th house can represent the type of circles or friend groups we are drawn to or attract (for better or worse)
The 11th also represents our views on society and the people who we choose to engage with whether it is in person or online. The 5th house ruler by the Sun has more of a fervent sense of self where there is dependency on one's confidence and personality to draw people on.
Pros and Cons:
